Majority of the billions of WhatsApp user worldwide would agree that the biggest missing feature on the app is it's pitiful options for multiple devices access. In a bid to ensure maximum security in it's end to end encryption, WhatsApp has delayed including this feature. It's common knowledge that it's IPad app is non-existent and it's desktop app is clunky.
According to a reliable source, WhatsApp has now nailed this feature. If true, using WhatsApp would now be seamless across your multiple devices; phones, iPad and desktop. This update works even when your main device is switched off or offline.
WhatsApp has developed an iPad app which will be released after the activation of this feature so you can use WhatsApp simultaneously in your phone and iPad.
As earlier mentioned, WhatsApp delayed this feature because they didn't want to compromise their end-to-end encryption and introducing linked devices makes it more difficult being that the end-to-end encryption has to extend to multiple endpoints on each side of the conversation both in person-to-person conversations and within groups too. This is a challenging but achievable feat.
The likelihood right now is that WhatsApp would use a local connection to transfer the message history from device to device over wifi. Since they won't be utilizing any external cloud service, which would have been a vulnerability, security is achievable.
